A major new development will soon bring a large number of long-term care beds to a high-profile location in Belleville.

Bay of Quinte MPP Todd Smith was joined by Mayor Mitch Panciuk at a location on a vacant lot near Sidney Street and Bell Blvd on Saturday morning for the announcement.

The province has allocated 160 new long-term care beds for the project, which will also include a 120-unit seniors residence complex nearby as part of a  “campus of care model”.

Neighbourhood Better Living is a partnership between SigNature Communities Inc., Clearway Construction Inc., and UniversalCare Canada Inc.

Clearway Construction has around 50 years of experience in the building field, though this will be their first project of this kind in Belleville.

Mayor Mitch Panciuk called this a big moment for the city.

Vice President of SigNature Communities Inc. Sebastian Mizzi says they wanted to “thank MPP Smith for all of his efforts and guidance in making this project a reality.”

Mizzi says they hope to present their revised site-plan to the city over the summer, with construction to hopefully begin the following spring (2023).

With the build to take 16-18 months, they hope to have it done by the end of 2024.

Including this newest announcement, the province has committed to 693 new and 395 upgraded long-term care beds in the region.
